Mini Explorers

Welcome to Basecamp

Our Basecamp

Adventures begin

At Mini Explorers, our “Basecamp” is more than just a place to play; a safe haven where young minds come to rest, learn, and grow. Nestled in the beautifully converted Georgian model farm of Crabtree Hall, Basecamp is where our explorers’ countryside adventures begin and wind down.

A Sanctuary of Learning and Play

Where children grow with nature

Indoor Havens

Basecamp houses five airy, light-filled indoor spaces where each day starts and ends. These rooms are thoughtfully designed to stimulate, comfort, and inspire our mini explorers. From the cosy reading nooks to the areas dedicated to imaginative play, every corner is a starting point for learning and fun.

Outdoor Adventures

Beyond the indoor spaces, Basecamp extends into the great outdoors with meticulously designed areas that encourage active participation and exploration. Our children have had a hand in adapting and sculpting these spaces, making them truly their own.

Cohort Journey

Learning together

Unlike traditional settings that separate children strictly by age, our Mini Explorers move from Baby Bunnies to Farm School 2 in cohort groups. What is a Cohort group – An academic cohort group in early years education is a group of young children who start and move through the stages of their early education together. This setup helps build strong friendships and provides a stable environment as they experience new learning activities at the same pace. For summer-born children, who are often the youngest in their school year, this arrangement offers crucial benefits:

Enhanced Confidence

Summer-borns feel more secure and confident in a familiar group setting.

Targeted Support

Educators can tailor support to ensure all children, especially younger ones, keep pace.

Social Inclusivity

The close-knit community within a cohort helps younger children feel included and valued.

Consistent Peer Relationships

Long-term relationships with peers help summer-borns feel less overwhelmed by age differences and more integrated in their learning environment

This cohort approach helps summer-born children gradually adapt to school life, ensuring they receive the nurturing and tailored support needed to thrive. We aim to minimise the attainment gap between summer born and winter born babies.

Special Features of Basecamp

Haven of imaginative play

The Orchard Play Area: A haven of imaginative play featuring an enormous sandpit and surrounded by young apple trees. Here, mini explorers enjoy the shade and, come the autumn, a harvest of fresh apples.

The Paddock: This area is central to our farm-school experience. Our explorers take the lead in our kitchen gardens and polytunnels, learning to plant, care for, and harvest a variety of produce. It’s also home to our rare-breed chickens, where gentle hands are a must for egg collecting. The mud kitchen becomes the star of the show during the winter months, offering endless fun and learning opportunities. There’s even a tractor to ride, just like Farmer Marks.

Routines and Rituals

Maintain Structured Schedules

Our daily routines are influenced by the rhythms of the seasons and the farming calendar. We maintain a structured schedule for mealtimes and rest to provide a stable routine that benefits all explorers. This structure supports a balance of energetic activity and needed downtime, ensuring that every child remains energised and engaged throughout the day.
